FAQ About Exebook

Unfortunately, the fact that a 'key' has to be generated from your site for each user would make it unworkable for me. I was hoping to only unlock the pages for people who had registered on my site.
Sorry if I was not completely clear, but of course people will register your book on your website! They will pay you and you will send them the "key" in exchange. You only use exebook.com website to generate the key for your user. It is completely free for you. Also the user cannot generate the key for him/herself using our website because the user don't know the "public key" the one that is stored on your local disk and no one knows that except you.

So if I register I can take my newly created ebook and sell it in any forum or fashion I desire? It is completely my own, under my control? Or is it somehow restricted?
Yes; once you've registered the program, you can create an unlimited number of Ebooks, and do with them as you like. In fact, that's why Exebook was created - to give writers that control over their work.

I cannot change the author and publisher information under BOOK. Is that reserved only for registered versions?
Yes, you can change the author and publisher information under your book only after you register. To register you should go to www.exebook.com and click the Register link.

Do exe files work with palm pilots and other PDA devices?
This is important question and I really hear it over and over again. Sorry to say that but currently Exebook works only with PC (IBM Compatibe Personal Computer as it was called olddays) and Windows. It uses EXE format which is the Windows native file format. PC is the most popular device this day, there are billions of them worldwide this is why exebook was made for PC. Exebook supports all versions of Windows from Windows 95, including 98, Me, 2000 and XP. There is no particular plan to make Exebook available on palms and all I can say is that "maybe one day".

Does Exebook rely on the browser ?
Exebook is independent from the browser. You can have no browser in your computer at all.

I am about to register my copy of exebook, but I want to be sure that I can edit the author field for each book I produce.Having a single publisher name is fine, but I need to be able to produce books for various authors.
We have such a program that make possible adding Author Names (without changing the Publisher Name) for the price of $5. Follow this link to buy the new Author Name.

Is exebook cross-platform?
No, only Windows version is currently available. Linux and Mac version may come out someday.

If I want to register before my book is finished, do I contact you directly?
You can register before your book is ready or you can register when it is ready. To register use the "Register" link on the home page www.exebook.com. If you have any questions please email support@exebook.com or use this web forum.

Can you import .rtf files?
Unfortunately Exebook Self-Publisher does not import .rtf files but you may use .html files instead of .rtf to create exebook. Exebook elf-Publisher can import .html files along with .txt. HTML is currently supported by most of the modern applications, that's why we have choosen to support this format instead of RTF.

What are the System Requirements for people reading these books? I assume they are only for PCs? What system specs do they need?
Exebooks and Exebook Self-Publisher run on PC with Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP. Mostly if your computer can run the Windows OS itself it will be able to run exebooks and Exebook Self-Publisher as well. Although producing large books will require more RAM, 64 or 128 megabytes recommended.

I have been trying to find out how I can change the author's name that is displayed in the information window that is available to readers when they read my book.
If you want to change the Author name and the Publisher name you have to register. You should go to our website www.exebook.com and click Register.

Ok so someone downloads my exebook. Can they than take this exe file, post it on the Web themselves and sell it? Additionally, how can I protect my cover work from being stolen and used by others? Is there a feature that lets us stop people from saving images in our books to their hard drives?
The .exe file itself is not enough to read the book. It will display only few first pages until you find a REG file for this book. So someone can take your exe, but will be not able to sell it because they will be unable to produce reg files for the exebook. nobody else but you can produce REG files for your exebook.
The REG file itself contain decryption key, purchaser name and personal information. Once your customer uses the REG file you sent him, the customer is now able to read the rest of the exebook. In addition the exebook will display the user name and the message "This book is owned by .." user name follows. So many people will not tend to use someone elses reg files since it is illegal and they know it. Also since .reg files contain personal info about the purchaser it is an additional reason for the purchaser not to send the REG file to anyone else.
Exebooks have no options to save images from them to hard drive. Yes, of course customers can use PrintScreen keys and third party software to make screen shoots. The only way around it is to use watermarks, these days there are many software titles that can add a watermark to the image and thus help you to protect the copyright.

I click 'import' and it gets that one file alright - but then when I want the next page it asks always if I want to save this project or not, leaving me with one losy page only. Maybe it does not accept regular web pages?
Exebook is unlike others ebook compilers therefore technique you are used to with them is not working with Exebook.
Exebook Self-Publisher works with one single file. The extention for the file is XP, it is native exebook format for the project. XP stands for Exebook Project. This one single file contains all your book from the cover image to the last page. When you compile the book, pages are separated automatically, that is not like with those programs that want you to have all pages already separated in different HTML files.
In your particular situation I advice to use your HTML editor to join all your HTML files into one big file and then import that into Exebook Self-Publisher.
I know after you have used to other compilers exebook way of doing things may seem wrong, but it is not wrong, it is just different.

In a post below, I noticed you mentioned that in order to insert your own Author info the charge is $5 and $50 for the Publiser info - is this PER book? Or is it a one time fee?
There is no charge to input your author's information when you purchase the Exebook software. The $5 charge is if you change author information after registering your account. The $50 charge is if you change the publisher information after registration, which (I assume) is like registering all over again.
When you purchase Exebook for $50, there are no other fees or costs. You can make as many books as you like, and you can sell them any way and anywhere you want. You become the owner and operator of your own publishing business. However, Exebook gives you a free page (Library) to advertise and from which customers can download your book, and provides you with all the support (including this forum) you might need.
Also, Exebook is affiliated with RegSoft (an ecommerce company) who will make the sales for you at a cost (30% or $3.00 minimum on each book sold). RegSoft will collect the money, send your customer an email with the registration key (to open the rest of the book), send you a detailed report of the sales, and send you a check when your take exceeds $25 (I think). You will have the option of having them send your customer the registration key, or you can email it to your customer, yourself. I suggest you to go to Regsoft and check the rest of the options and services before you do anything else.
I would say the most important thing you will need to do is promote your books on and off the internet. If you can't draw your customers to the Exebook Library, to your web page, or other places you have your books advertised, you can't expect to make sales. Of course, there are sites that want to help direct people to your site, for a price.

Do you consider an e-book the same as a piece of shareware?
Yes, e-book is a shareware. RegSoft accept them for sale and many of exebook authors are selling their books through the RegSoft. You should sign up with RegSoft and add your poduct to their website. They will give you the URL for your e-book. It changes per product you register with RegSoft. Then you place your e-book on some website. It may be your personal website or any other. You can place it to www.exebook.com/library for free. You have to put the URL in the book for the 'try before you buy' (as you have already said) so that the customers get to the RegSoft webpage when they follow this link.

How do I apply for a free registration?
