FAQ Using Exebook

I have tried for days to insert a graphic and have not made any progress. I put in and not graphic appears... what am I doing wrong?
You are better off using your browse and let the software find the picture for you. The image even shows up before you insert it into the document.
Click on the INSERT tab.IMAGE should be the third one down in the drop down box. Click on IMAGE, and a pop up window will display the contents of a directory on your computer. Browse to the directory with your pictures in it, and select the picture you want in the document.
If you want the picture centered, insert the word
in front of the entry. And after the entry either insert the word
of simply go back to the text alignment you had or
If you have a large picture and want to display it anyway, insert a page break before the picture, and after the picture, making sure that your page break carries over to the left hand page coming next.

I must admit to being confused about the edition key. In particular, I don't know how the end user inputs this to their system.
This is a brief description of how you manage the "license" or "registration" keys for your exebook. Exebook's security system is based on the RSA algorythm - the industry standard for encryption. In simple words you need two passwords: one to encrypt the book and one to decrypt it. The first one is automatically generated along with your exebook and saved into the file with the XPF extention. Keep it in the safe place, don't give it to anyone you do not completely trust! The other one you generate via our online system and send to the customer.
The online system is available 24 hours a day here:
http://www.exebook.com/keys
Since the passwords are very long to make them harder to crack even with the newest cracking technologies, the user don't have to type passwords in to the dialog boxes. They rather receive the little file with the extention REG (you send it by email to the customer) and double click the file and the password is automatically entered into his computer.
Unfortunately you can only use the keys after you register Exebook Self-Publisher for $50.

Is it possible to have two spaces between the period (.) and the beginning of the first word of the next sentence? Example: jdhgsdf.  Kfdhjsdhs
Insert   in the text were you want additioal space to be. You can insert as many   as you want.

Every time, I import HTML into exebook it does not work out as it should. Like if I have text on left and a picture on right. The picture goes on the bottom.
Exebook Self-Publisher can import text from the plain text files and HTML files. When you import from the plain text file you even have option s to control the process, but when you impot HTML you must realize that only basic HTML is imported.
Exebook Self-Publisher imports the following information from the HTML:

1) Text itself.
2) Fonts. Including name, size and color.
3) Font styles, i.e. bold, italic, underline.
4) Images. Only image itself is imported, additional tags as border or stretch values are not yet supported.
5) Paragraph formatting. Which includes: paragraph breaks, text aligment: center, left, right, justify.
6) Hyperlinks.

Tables, frames, JavaScript, Forms are not supported. And this is why the image that was on the right side of the text is below text in exebook.
EBook compilers based on the Microsoft Internet Explorer engine have those functions in them, but exebook does not. The reason is that exebook uses it's own program core designed for ebooks only, not for web pages, with maximum attention paid to security and portability of the content.
HTML is of course not a native format for exebooks, and just importing HTML is not enough to make your book look the best. Although HTML importing does cover most of hand work you have to do with text formatting the best results are acheived when you understand and use exebook tags. They are explained in the "The Launch of The Book" in the "Making your Exebok Look Better" chapter. And also in our new manual that will be released on the site in a few days.

I can run the e-book on my computer at work with no problem by double clicking on it's icon or a shortcut. But, if I create a book for sale, is the end user supposed to only double click on it to run it, or should they use the windows install, in the control panel, on the exe file so that something is marked in the registry?
The exebook newly downloaded by the reader launches in DEMO MODE, so the reader can only read first few pages (when you create the book, you choose how much in particular, by default it is 17). When the reader reaches the last page that available for free the reader sees the message "The rest of the book is not available until purchase, click here to buy" and that link goes to your purchase (registration) page. Once the reader pays he/she receives the REG file, double clicks it and from now on can continue reading the book.
To create keys use our web page www.exebook.com/keys. In the near future we plan to cooperate with some of credit card processing companies to automate entire process.

I have written it in several volumes (each a different exebook) but would like to sell it with only 1 reg. key. Is that possible?
You should create the separate key for each volume.

I have many fonts installed. If I create Exebook in a font that it not installed on someone else's computer, when they open the book will these fonts display? Or does exebook import the font style with the book?
Exebook does convert all your text into a bitmap image, this means all data that it carries is actually a series of pictures rather than text. So obviously it doesn't matter if the reader has a font on the computer installed. Feel free to use as many fonts as you want in your book! Do not worry, the book will be displayed on the reader's computer exactly as you see it on your screen.

When I import my files from Word the page breaks are not preserved.
This happens because Exebook Self-Publisher can not import page breaks from Word. Exebook Self-publisher make page breaks automatically when importing .HTML files.

How can I insert page breaks into the exe.file?
You can use the tag. Just type it in the place where you want your page break.
You also can do it using the option INSERT in Exebook Self-publisher.

The images I used in creating my book are stored on my hard drive. Do I need to send them to the server in order for the images to show in my book or has the software copied the pictures and they will automatically display once exe.file is opened?
The images from your disk will be automatically shown in your exebook just when you open the .exe file. All the images are imbedded into the .exe file.

What is the GAL command for going to the next line without a paragraph indent?
There is no explicit line break in the Exebook Self-Publisher .You have to put

and after you want to set it back put the previous value of the line indent.

Putting spaces into the exebook work area does not equate to spaces in the finished book. Any way to put spaces in?
The Exebook Self-Publisher puts only one space in any case. If you want have more spaces you should put &nb

I am having trouble figuring out how to get my e-book on my web site so that it can be downloaded from there.
First step is to get your personal web site and there are many ways to get your personal website. For instance I can make one for you for free (as for any other writer that uses exebook) at http://www.exebook.com/authors/your-name. You just have to email me the information that you want on your website.
Or you may wish to create your website at any free hosting like Hypermart.com or Geocities.com.
All other steps like creating a main page for your site, uploading the book etc. really depend on the first step. In other words they are different for different sites.
Maybe you already have a web page? Probably I can explain you how to get your book there, but I have to know where is your web page located.
Then you can just email your book to support@exebook.com and it will be displayed in Exebook Library within a short time.

How does one get the text to flow around a graphic?
Unfortunately you cannot get the text to flow around the graphic. Such an option is not available. You can insert image into the text only as a character.

I write in spanish and french. My first ebook will be in spanish, there we use many accented characters. HOW do I use accents with ExeBook?

Another hint that may help in most cases is to change the "Charset" or "Script" for the Editor Font of Exebook Self-Publisher. To do so open your Self-Publisher, choose the Setup option from the Options menu and then click the "Change editor font" button. Please note that the Charset I am talking about is not the font name or size, it is an additional field. See the image, the "Charset" or "Script" is indicated by the red arrow. You should select "European Characters" or "Western" to be able to enter and compile accents and special characters.

When I first started using exe.book, I could bring up different paper styles. But I can't get the function to work anymore. I found the page of paper styles you offer online, but I can't find a way to download them.
First of all you should go to C:\Program files\Exebook Self-Publisher\textures\ to find the textures there. If there is none then download and install Exebook Self-Publisher once again. Then the textures will be there. Then using the option Book Design add the paper style and cover image you want .
You can add the cover image or the paper texture you created in your art editor or take some from our website following the link:
www.exebook.com/design/textures/
www.exebook.com/design/covers/
To add the paper style or the cover image rightclick the image in the web browser and select the "Save as" option from the popup menu.

I created a front cover with an art editor , and I uploaded it to my mms. It displays great when I open my book. The only problem is that it's too large and only about 75% of the picture shows. Can I reduce the size in exe.book, or do I have to go back to my art editor or Word to make it smaller?
You cannot reduce the size of your cover image in Exebook Self-publisher. If your cover image is too large you should adjust it in the art editor to exactly match the size of your page in Exebook Self-Publisher.

I tried to upload my exebook file to my web page (geocities), but the "pagebuilder" will only upload files ending in htm, html, gif, jpg or txt. Exebook files have an XP extension. Do I convert the file (how?) or what?
The XP file is an Exebook Project file, this file is for your personal use only. You should convert your XP file into Exebook with the EXE extention and that EXE file is going to public. As for Geocities, currently owned by Yahoo! I do not know if they accept EXE files but you may want to send your EXE to us and we will put it on our web server www.exebook.com. Then you can link to that EXE from your Geocities webpage if they will not accept your EXE.

How do I convert XP to EXE? And could I convert to TXT?
To convert XP to EXE you should open the .xp file in the Exebook Self-Publisher click the Create ExeBook option from the EXE menu.

How can I get my novel posted on your Library Site?
Please send us your exebook as an email attachment together with the book description and the orderlink(if the book is not free).

How can I insert a small table in my book. I didn't see any reference to tables in the manual, and the HTML commands don't seem to work.
Unfortunately HTML tables are not supported by Exebook Self-Publisher. You can insert table in your book as an image(JPG,BMP,GIF).

How do I save the book for free distribution? I don't need to download the .reg file for the free books you have online but I need one to open my own book. What am I doing wrong?
You should do this at the moment you create your exebook project. To make your exebook free use menu Book option Try Buy Setup of exebook Self-Publisher. Choose "The Book is Free"

I am a beginner with Exebook and I need a suggestion from you. I have seen that many special characters (i.e. the characters that are normally obtained typing the ALT key + four numbers example: ALT+0169 for c) are not shown in the Exebook when it is compiled.
I have seen that the SPACE character can be obtained in the compliled book with this sequence: are there other similar sequences supported?
Special characters can be inserted with the following sequence: &xxx;
Where xxx can be one of the following:

nbsp - Non Breaking Space
quot - "
amp - &
lt - <
gt - >
copy - c
sect -
laquo - <
raquo - >
reg - R
deg - ø
tm - T

Also xxx may be a numerical value for instance A will display the letter "A".

My e-book says "not available until purchase" even though I have bought the programme and you did send me the registration and order numbers. What do I do now?
This is the correct situation. You just created a new book and it is unregistered. Now you are the book creator and it is up to you to give or sell registrations to anyone. You can create a .REG file (the key) for use by your customers or for use by yourself by visiting our key making webpage
Please let us know if the explanation makes no sense for you or you have problems accessing the web page mentioned above.
Let me try explain in other words. You have paid for Exebook Self-Publisher and you now can use it fully. But books you make with Self-Publishers are not registered, because you are the owner and you decide whom to give or sell the registration of the book. The first case with the book you just created is to give a free registration for yourself. Try the link above and as you suceed with giving a free registration of the book for yourself you will sell it to others. Which would be your Self-Publishing business.

I can't figure out how to align the .jpg images I am inserting in my book. I've tried every combination with "ascent=" and the images still won't align with the first line of the text. I understand that the text won't wrap, but is there some way just to get the bottom of the image to align with the bottom of the first line of text and not create a large space between the first and the second line of the paragraph?
Please check your HTML code and make sure that you have put all >< and quotation marks right.
Here is the way how should it be:

<img src="M.jpg" ascent=40>any years ago...

Exebook does it the right way BUT.... unlike other shareware-protected system it does NOT include a key generator. From what I understand the key generator is located on the website.... and if the site is down? If exebook goes broke? If the author decides to do something else? Then what??
You are absolutely right. In the future we plan to make the standalone Key Generator which you will be able to download on your computer with Exebook Self-Publisher.
There also will be an opportunity to download Key Generator from www.exebook.com for those who have purchased the older versions.
If you have any problems with generating keys on our website now you may go to www.regsoft.com and sign up there. Exebook is in the partnership with RegSoft so they can generate keys automatically for their clients. Download Ebook compiler

I created a frontcover picture in PaintBrush and was able to put it on my exebook through the "Design" function. But when I tried to "insert" a picture of a map that I created in PageManager, it wouldn't show up in my book.
What image type do you use for the map? It should be JPG, GIF or BMP.
You may also check the size of your image . It should not be larger than the page size as in this case it will not display in your book.

I want to design my own Icon for my exe book....where can I upload this to use? I mean the Icon people see when they download my book to their computer. I would like to create my own design.
You can change Exebook Icon using the third-party software which you can download from www.download.com for example. May be in future we will add such feature to Exebook Self-Publisher.

How do I remove the exebook.com link that pops up on the upper left hand side of the book?
We are sorry but the present moment you can not remove the pope-up. We bring our apologies for the inconveniences it may cause.

Is it possible to start the book from the right including page #'s and go to the left which you need if you are writing in Arabic or Hebrew.
Unfortunately the present moment there is no such feature in the Exebook Self-Publisher. But we are thinking of adding it in the future. Look to the future updates.

What is the best graphics size for cover art to completely fill the cover? Should we use the exact dimensions of the XT1, XT2, etc. formats or should we use a size a little smaller? What pixel resolution do you recommend for imported graphics?
If you want you graphic to completely fill the cover it should exactly match the size of the page ( XT1,XT2). But if your graphic is a little smaller there is no problem too. You may try it and see what you will get.

In your example eBook "The Launch of a Book", in the upper left-hand corner of the book there are two icons - print and rotate. How do I get those to appear in my book?
Such features are not availabe in Exebook Self-Publisher now. They were available in the first versions of Exebook and then were removed. We are sorry for the inconveience.

How can I add a line break without the next line being indented? when I use <p> it automatically indents the next line. How can I stop this?
Insert <indent first=0><p><indent first=x> where x is the indent you set up in the beginning.

Text centering and text justification : are these functions available in the registered version?
You can use the tags <center> before and </center> after the text you wish to center. Likewise, use <justify> and </justify> for text you want to justify. There is also <page> to break off text to begin a new page/chapter (use </page> only once at the end of the book).

I have noticed that in the sample books "The Gold Bug" and "The Launch of the Book" that under the logo on the left hand side when hovering, pops up printing option and something else. I can't seem to get these in my books that I create.
Unfortunately the present moment there is no Printing Option in Exebook. We have desabled it. But we are going to add it to the future version of Exebook after some revisions.

I downloaded your Self-Publisher, and I was wondering if there was a way to print the documentation?
Visit our web site and enter support area by clicking support button. Locate the Self-Publisher documentation, and use your browser's Print function to print it.

What do those Registration Companies offer, do I really need them?
The registration company will process all your registrations and payments quickly and professionally. There will be a lot less clerical work for you. Once a month they will send you a payment report with all registrations they have processed for you, and will transfer you the payments received. In exchange for their service they will ask for a small commission.

How I can do chapter seperations without having to do <p> spacing?
Use Import function. When you import your book from a file, the paragraph separation with <p> will be done automatically.

What about creating a table of contents like your other books?
To create a clickable table of contents you have to put an anchor tag in the begining of each chapter.
Decide where you want your contents, in the beginning of the book or the end. Copy chapter names in the place of your table of contents, separate lines with <p>. Trun each table of contents line into a link with the <link> tag. Read our manual for more information about links and anchors, the section "Making your ExeBook look better".

Example of the first line in the table of contents:

<link anchor=introduction> Introduction </link> <p>

Example of the "Introduction" chapter:

<anchor name=introduction>
Introduction <p>
(...your chapter text follows here...)

How do I create a title page?
Use the image editing program. This could be whatever from Microsoft(tm) PaintBrush to Adobe(tm) Photo Shop(tm) or CorelDRAW!(tm)

Are there size limits on the number of pages or file size for a book?
Average size of the book I receive is usually from half megabyte to three megabytes. Pictures take most of file size. You can check the Exebook Library for instance, the file sizes can be found under the title of the book.

Could you tell me if the fact that my exebooks always opens at the last page everytime I download the book is a bug or is it something I forget to setup when I create the book?
This is not a bug. Exebooks always open on the page where you stoped reading it. If you close your book at page 10 then the next time you open it, it will open on the page ten. The page number is stored in your Windows Registry not in the EXE file. So it does not matter if you download it or open from local disc. When someone else will download your book the book will open from the begining of course.

What is the full capacity of an exebook?
The number of pages you can have in your book depends on page size. Larger the single page - less pages available. Also it depends on the system where you create your book, if you have less RAM you may have "Not enough memory" message on very large books. Exebook with 5000 pages in XT1 format can be created and viewed on most computers. Also it depends on number of graphics you insert in your book, it may grow up to 100MB but this number also depends on the CPU and RAM of your system.

Does the exebook perform well when burned to a CD?
Yes, CDs are great for distributing exebooks. But you have to think how you distribute REG files (passwords) with them. Either via Internet or on the same CD.

Does each individual customer need a different password?
Actually password is a REG file about 300 bytes long. You can distribute single REG file to all customers of an edition (issue) of your directory.

Can I change the passwords every so often. For example, if I print Directory #1, First Edition it has one password. Then if I print Directory #1, Second Edition it has another password.
Definetly. Actually this is the only way because each time you compile a book it will require new passwords.

You are working on a self-sufficient key generator. Is that coming any time soon and will the upgrade from one edition of exebook self publisher to the next level be very expensive?
Next update - 1.3 will have key generator embedded. Release is in about a month or two. The upgrade will be free to registered customers of previous versions. We are working on a very improved version 2.0 release date, price and discount plan is not yet known.

Will a Macintosh version of this be available in the next 2 years?
Chances are good that it will be available within 2 years. Maybe for the begining we will make Self-Publisher for Windows generate exebooks for Macintosh as an option.

Each page of my book is supposed to have an illustration on it. I would like push the illustration down from the top of the page by about 1/2 and inch. What should I do?
To move the image down from the top of the page use

tag. Each time you insert it, it will be like Enter in MS Word: adding a new empty line.
